About this book
A Maid of the Silver Sea is by John Oxenham. The story is inscribed to a friend, Edward Baker of La Chaumiere, Sark, on whose most hospitable and supremely comfortable verandah the story was partly written. The contents list, among others, chapters called How Two Lay in a Cleft, How Nance Came to Be Herself and How Old Tom Found the Silver Heart.
The text says that on a pitch-dark, starless night the lanes of Little Sark are as black as the inside of an ebony ruler. The text describes a sky without a cloud like a mighty hollowed sapphire, in which blazed the clear white sun, and the vast plain of the sea, sweeping away into infinity, as a still deeper blue. A character named Gard says, 'She has given me my life, and I will give it all to making her happy.'
