About this book
Fishing and kelp burning sustain the families of Innishmore, where John Luttrell arrives with his seriously ill wife and young son. Their home is made from part of an old abbey, and the withdrawn landowner spends his days searching for antiquities. His son, nicknamed the Prince by the islanders, plays with local children and helps along the shore. Charles Lever opens this novel with a community exposed to storms and poverty, then shows how the newcomers' sorrow and social standing affect its everyday life.
A later conversation brings a different kind of discomfort. The banker Mr. Ladarelle raises a mill's water supply with Sir Within, who redirects the talk toward wine and dinner. Sir Within's concern for polished manners also shapes his exchange with his ward Kate. These scenes give readers interested in social fiction a contrast between material hardship and the small affronts that unsettle wealthy households.
