About this book
Andrew P. Peabody's A Manual of Moral Philosophy is designed for colleges and high schools, as its title page says, and gives the author as Plummer Professor of Christian Morals in Harvard University. This edition is dated 1873. Its chapters cover Action, The Springs of Action, The Right, Rights and Obligations, Motive, Passion and Habit, Virtues, and Prudence, or duties to one's self.
One passage argues that the freedom of the will must be kept as a truth of consciousness, and that God's foreknowledge and human freedom cannot be shown to be incompatible. Another turns to public worship and to the obligations that come with a revelation from God, illustrated by a father's commands to his son. A further passage discusses Bentham, whose influence on legislation it calls beneficial on both sides of the Atlantic.
