About this book
The Teacher: Or Moral Influences Employed in the Instruction and Government of the Young is by Jacob Abbott, described as Late Principal of the Mt. Vernon Female School, Boston. The book is addressed to the trustees and patrons of the Mt. Vernon Female School, Boston, and its copyright entry gives the year 1839. The text says that a teacher who studies the laws of human nature must necessarily take a strong interest in his work.
A teacher who goes to his employment only to perform a certain regular round of daily work, the text says, never can take pleasure in the school. The text says there may be some cases where the use of the Scriptures is altogether forbidden in school. The text calls it a sad mistake when teachers postpone a duty a day or two, from timidity or other causes, and says that the moral impressions will be altogether more strong and salutary if an act of solemn religious worship is made the first opening act of the school.
