About this book

A Manual of the Malay language is by William Edward Maxwell. The book presents the origin of the aboriginal Malay language as that of a mixed dialect, borrowing something from the Tibeto-Anam languages. A later Indian influence, belonging to a far more advanced civilisation, flowed in a great stream into the Western Archipelago, and the Sanskrit element is credited to this epoch, while Malay is said to be mainly dissyllabic.

The syllable bu, bun or bung is said to occur in a considerable number of words conveying an idea of roundness, such as Bu-lan the moon, Bu-lat round and Bu-ah fruit. An exercise in English includes the lines Get dinner ready and How much do you give your syce a month. A word list pairs English words with Malay ones, such as Sheep, kambing biri-biri and Sheet, kain selimut.
