About this book
Useful Phrases in the Shanghai Dialect, with Index-Vocabulary and other helps, is compiled by Gilbert McIntosh. The contents list names, among others, Salutations, On the Street, The Merchant, The Cook, Houseboy and Coolie, Amah and The Gentlemen's Tailor. The introduction says the compilation of these phrases was suggested by the frequent requests on the part of busy residents or transient visitors for a handbook.
A description of the Shanghai Romanised System says that nearly all the syllables are represented by the combination of an initial and a final. The phrase section sets sentences, such as You ask too big a price, beside characters and spellings like Noong thau-kuh ka-dien thuh kyui. The index-vocabulary lists words such as Tiffin, Timber and Tired, each followed by a spelling and numbers.
