About this book
Of the Orthographie and Congruitie of the Britan Tongue is by Alexander Hume. The title page calls the work A Treates, noe shorter then necessarie, for the Schooles. The contents list, among others, gives chapters called Of the Latine Vouales and Of the Britan Vouales.
A biographical note says that on the dismissal of Hercules Rollock, Rector of the High School, Edinburgh, from his office, Hume was unanimously chosen to succeed him, with his appointment dated 23rd April, 1596. The text says we find that the south and north differ more in accent than in symbol, and also that one word with a sundrie accent can have a diverse signification. The text says Cicero, in his book de Oratore ad Brutum, makes it a natural harmonie that every word pronounced by the mouth of man have one acute syllab, and that never farther from the end than the third syllab.
