About this book
A Message to Garcia is by Elbert Hubbard. It opens with a piece headed Apologia, Horse Sense, on working for an employer, and then recounts how the essay was written one evening in an hour, on 22 February 1899, after a small argument over the teacups about whether Rowan was the real hero of the Cuban War.
The text says the hero is the man who does his work and carries the message to Garcia. Another passage imagines a clerk who is asked to find Garcia and answers with a string of questions, such as which encyclopedia and whether he was hired for that. The demand that followed is described too, including a telegram from George H. Daniels of the New York Central Railroad asking the price of one hundred thousand copies in pamphlet form. A piece headed Life in Abundance sets out a wish to be radiant.
