About this book

Clifford Whittingham Beers begins his autobiography by recalling the anxious child and ambitious New Haven schoolboy he once was. School societies, magazine management, tennis and entry into Yale share the opening pages with worries about his family. He then connects an older brother's long illness with the mental crisis that changed his own life. Writing after his return to health, Beers treats his experience as a responsibility to speak about the care of vulnerable people.

The account becomes a firsthand record of psychiatric hospital life in the United States. A dispute over supper reveals the power attendants held over a patient, while his discussion of physical restraints and heavily sedating medicines challenges institutional practices. Personal memory and criticism of hospital care meet in the same narrative. For readers interested in the history of mental health treatment, the book offers a patient's perspective on dignity, authority and the conditions inside institutions.
