About this book

A dying man watches for a light at sea while a storm lashes the island outside his window. Beside him are Father Adrian, a young priest, and Gomez, a servant whose long service has brought him to this remote bedside. An approaching steamer turns the vigil into a scene of urgent expectation, with the rough entrance to the harbour adding another danger.

Oppenheim's novel combines this shadowy opening with a conflict over love, family loyalty and reputation. In a later scene, Arthur de Vaux arrives to find his brother Paul with Adrea and demands an explanation of rumours circulating through the county. Paul must face both his brother's anger and the expectations attached to his position in a prominent household.
