About this book

A newly appointed captain stands on deck in the Gulf of Siam, surrounded by still water and a crew he barely knows. Only a fortnight into command, he feels uncertain about both his ship and his own ability to lead it. Joseph Conrad builds this short sea story around that private unease, giving the captain a first-person voice that records small gestures, awkward conversations and the pressures of responsibility.

A concealed man in the captain's cabin complicates his dealings with the master of a nearby vessel. While the visitor recounts a death at sea and a dangerous storm, the narrator thinks of his hidden companion as another self. The tension lies in divided loyalties and the difficulty of judging another person. Readers interested in psychological fiction will find a closely observed study of authority, secrecy and sympathy within the confined space of a ship.
