About this book

The book's own summary says Annabel Pellissier, for reasons of her own, lets Sir John Ferringhall believe she is her sister Anna. Anna lets the deception continue and bears her sister's reputation, which in Paris is that of a coquette, and complications follow when both sisters return to London. The contents begin with The Carpet-Knight and the Lady and The Adventure of Annabel.

In one scene a young woman in Paris asks a man to lend her the money for a ticket to London, where she says an aunt will take her in. Sir John suggests the train by Boulogne and Folkestone from the Gare du Nord and offers to see her off, and he reflects that forty-five is not so very old. In another, a man who has followed a bus from Russell Square to Hampstead asks why she will not give her address, and she says she wants no acquaintances in London. In another passage Sir John and Annabel talk of dining and taking coffee on the boulevards.
