About this book
The title page names Captain James Cook and David Samwell, Surgeon of The Discovery. The text says the object of the publication is to give a more particular relation of that unfortunate affair, which the writer finds is in general but imperfectly understood. The text says public opinion seemed to attribute the loss of Captain Cook's life, in some measure, to rashness or too much confidence on his side, whereas nothing can be more ill-founded or unjust.
The text says it is enough to say that no man was ever more beloved or admired. The text draws on the information of four or five midshipmen, who arrived on the spot at the conclusion of the fatal business. A note tells of a visit paid one day on board the Discovery by Tamataherei (Kamakahelei), the queen of that island, accompanied by her husband Taeoh (Kaeokulani).
