About this book
Getting horses and supplies to the Gulf of Carpentaria proves difficult before William Landsborough's search for Burke and Wills can begin. His account brings together expedition reports, letters and a journal. The opening follows the Firefly through a gale and onto a reef, then records the work of feeding the horses, salvaging stores and cutting a passage through the vessel's side to bring the animals ashore.
Water supplies and land suitable for livestock occupy much of Landsborough's attention. In a later address, he describes following a stream, tracing its springs and returning to the depot when water became scarce. Named assistants and the crew of the Victoria contribute to the practical work behind the expedition. For readers interested in exploration in Australia, the book offers close observation of transport, terrain and resources, alongside the author's hopes for pastoral settlement.
