A Passage to India
A Passage to India is E. M. Forster’s finest and last novel, published in 1924 and set in British India in the final decades of the Raj. When the eager young Englishwoman Adela Quested visits India and joins an outing to the mysterious Marabar Caves led by the kindly Muslim doctor Aziz, something happens in the darkness that she cannot fully explain, and her accusation against him tears the fragile world of the colony apart along the lines of race and empire. Forster writes with irony and deep humanity about the near impossibility of true friendship across the gulf of colonial power. It is one of the great novels of the twentieth century.
