About this book

New instruments expanded both what astronomers could see and what they could ask about the sky. Agnes M. Clerke traces that development across the nineteenth century, following discoveries through the observations, experiments and people that produced them. Her account begins with Herschel's studies of stars and nebulae, then follows work on the sun, planets and comets. Chapters on telescope construction connect the growing reach of observation with advances in optical glass and instrument design.

The later part turns to the study of the physical properties of celestial bodies, with spectrum analysis and the relationship between sunspot cycles and magnetic disturbances among its subjects. Clerke writes for general readers, arranging related discoveries into narratives and supplying references to original sources. Read today, this history offers a view of scientific knowledge as it was being assembled, including the evolving theories and practical methods that shaped astronomical research.
