About this book
The New Astronomy is by Samuel Pierpont Langley, director of the Allegheny Observatory. The preface says the pages were written not for the professional reader, but with the hope of reaching a part of that educated public. The text says that the explosion which occurred at Krakatao, at five minutes past ten, on the 27th of August, 1883, was heard at a distance of eighteen hundred miles, according to official evidence.
The text says the moon is at some times farther from the earth than at others, and that the shadow, something like a sewing-needle in its real proportions, sometimes does not reach the earth at all. The text describes a crater as quite unlike most terrestrial craters, not only in its enormous size but in its proportions.
