About this book
The discussion of colour variability says that observations have so far been made only in passing, and that casual study seldom produces effective results. The text identifies the nature of the spectroscopic response to colour change as an essential question for further investigation. The proposed investigation would offer an important gain in knowledge if visual alterations of hue could satisfactorily be tested by prismatic analysis.
The discussion calls the correlation of results a vital need of astronomy. The chapter on double-star spectra describes the close relationship between the spectra of double stars and their colours. The account distinguishes visual impressions from prismatic analysis, whose results cannot be wholly anticipated from an eye that does not separate its sensations into their elements.
