About this book

Suggestion, rather than a mysterious loss of control, supplies Melvin Powers with his starting point for this 1961 handbook. He compares hypnosis directed by another person with the practice of giving suggestions to oneself, using familiar examples from advertising to explain his view of suggestibility. The chapters cover entering and leaving the hypnotic state, conditioning exercises, deeper states and practical applications.

Powers presents these methods as skills developed through patience and repeated practice. In the discussion of the somnambulistic state, he considers the complications of testing memory and argues that the deepest level is not essential to the results he describes. His foreword proposes self-hypnosis as an aid to therapy while acknowledging the need for judgment. Readers interested in the history of popular psychology will find a direct account of one author's methods, assumptions and therapeutic claims.
