About this book

Hugo Münsterberg, a Harvard professor of psychology who also held a medical degree from Heidelberg, wrote this 1909 volume to separate the science of treating illness through the mind from the faith cures and fashionable talk of his day. Mind and body, suggestion and hypnotism, and the subconscious are taken up in turn.

The book runs in three parts. The first lays out the psychological basis, with chapters on the aim of psychology, mind and brain, and psychology and medicine. The second covers the practical work: general and special methods, then the mental and bodily symptoms a physician meets. The third asks where psychotherapy belongs in relation to the church, the physician and the community.

It is a period text from the first decade of the twentieth century, useful for anyone curious about how early applied psychology argued its case. The author writes for doctors and ministers alike, and he puts as much weight on useful work and the practitioner's sympathy as on any technique.
