About this book
The treatise gives directions for making perfumes, sachet powders, fumigating materials, dentifrices and cosmetics, alongside an account of natural and artificial perfume substances. The receipts explain that volatile oils are specified directly rather than as tinctures because the oils will in time dissolve completely, with possible exceptions for ylang-ylang oil and perhaps orris-root oil.
The discussion calls filtration the cheaper process but requires precautions to exclude air as much as possible and prevent injurious changes to the oil. The directions place the filtering apparatus in a semi-dark, cool location rather than in the sun. The account of vanilla identifies vanillin as its chief odoriferous substance and credits Gobley with applying that term.
