About this book
Soap-Making Manual is a practical handbook on the raw materials, their manipulation, analysis and control in the modern soap plant, by E. G. Thomssen. The prefatory note says the material appeared several years ago in serial form in the American Perfumer and Essential Oil Review. A cake from the press is moved to a small tank, treated with sufficient caustic soda to convert the fat content into soap, and saturated brine is then added to salt out the soap.
The boiling is continued for 24-48 hours, allowing 18 inches for boiling room or the grease will boil over. For boiling continued 48 hours the text adds 1 per cent. of saponifier, and for 24 hours boiling it adds 1.5 per cent. A table gives percentage, specific gravity and Beaume degree of pure glycerine solutions.
