About this book

First grade pupils in Santa Rosa helped shape the language of this collection of fairy tales and myths. E. Louise Smythe describes telling stories, discussing them with the children and recording their oral retellings before turning them into reading lessons. Short sentences and groups of practice words support a reader with a small sight vocabulary. The contents bring together The Ugly Duckling, The Little Pine Tree, Little Red Riding-Hood and stories of Thor and Jason.

The tales move from a duckling's difficult reception in the farmyard to magical gifts made by dwarfs for the Norse gods. In one Norse tale, Loki displays a crown, a spear and a ship while Brok challenges his claims about their makers. Parents and teachers can use the book to explore how familiar spoken stories become written reading practice, and how children's own expressions can influence a retelling.
