About this book

Familiar story characters take speaking parts in Florence Holbrook's collection of short plays for younger children. Little Red Riding-Hood carries honey and butter through the wood, and Goldilocks talks with her doll as they stray from the road. Cast lists, named speakers and scene divisions turn these tales into material for reading aloud, with songs and simple stage directions woven into the dialogue.

The collection also reaches beyond fairy tales to figures such as King Alfred, Robin Hood and William Tell. In another play, the days of the week speak for themselves, linking their names with old beliefs and their personalities with household work, school and rest. Holbrook's opening note asks children to imagine how each character would sound and behave. The result gives teachers, families and readers interested in children's theater a view of how storytelling, expressive reading and lessons in sympathy were brought together in an early classroom reader.
