About this book
Here and Now Story Book presents experimental stories written for children of the City and Country School and the Nursery School of the Bureau of Educational Experiments. The explanation of here and now stories takes children's firsthand experiences as a starting point, while rejecting a literal restriction to those experiences. The discussion of education and art says stories must begin with the familiar and immediate but must lead children beyond them.
A story gives a new engine a desire for turning wheels, steam, smoke, a ringing bell and a sounding whistle. Eben embraces a calf and names the animal after his baby sister, the only thing he loves better than a calf.
