About this book
A Raisin in the Sun is Lorraine Hansberry's play, first staged on Broadway in 1959. It follows the Younger family, who share a cramped apartment on the South Side of Chicago. When a ten-thousand-dollar life insurance check arrives after the death of the father, each member of the family has a different dream for it: Mama wants a house, her son Walter Lee wants to invest in a business, and his sister Beneatha hopes to become a doctor. Their plan to move to a house in an all-white neighbourhood brings the family face to face with prejudice. Hansberry was the first Black woman to have a play produced on Broadway, and the work is a staple of school and theatre programmes.
