The Return of Peter Grimm is novelised from the play by David Belasco, with illustrations by John Rae. Hartmann, asked whether he likes being secretary, answers yes, in a way, and says he has walked outside in the gardens and nurseries so many years that it seems queer to be penned up indoors.
Hartmann says it sometimes makes him feel bitter to think what he might have done with vegetables if he had not squandered so much God-given time studying Greek. A speaker says he wants the deal kept quiet till it's settled, and says he asked someone to meet him at the tavern instead of at the house. Dr. McPherson comes out of the Grimm house and sits down on the edge of the vine-bordered stoop, very tired after a hard and trying night.
