About this book
A dinner in Calais quickly becomes an occasion for reflections on generosity and bad manners. The traveller in Laurence Sterne's 1768 fiction has crossed from Dover after an argument about France. He congratulates himself on his warm feelings toward others, then speaks harshly to a Franciscan who asks for help with his convent. Once the monk leaves, the narrator regrets his language and resolves to learn better manners as his travels continue.
Brief encounters give this humorous travel narrative its interest. In another scene, the narrator gives a girl a coin, walks beside her and helps her carry her books. Her expressions of thanks prompt him to think about courtesy and the ties between strangers.
