About this book
A Short History of Astronomy includes an account of Tycho’s discoveries concerning irregularities in the moon’s movement. The account says Tycho found a further small inequality, called the annual equation, dependent on the earth’s position in its path around the sun, but never completely investigated the inequality. The discussion of the moon’s orbit describes its inclination to the ecliptic as oscillating regularly rather than remaining fixed.
The discussion of stellar motion treats apparent speed and brightness as probable, but by no means infallible, indications of nearness. A report of measurements of 61 Cygni gives a result announced at the end of 1838: an annual parallax of about a third of an arcsecond. Regiomontanus is described as settling in Nürnberg, then one of the most flourishing cities in Germany.
