About this book
A telescope and a page of calculations can belong to the same scientific enterprise, and Sir Robert Stawell Ball gives space to both in these biographical sketches. Published in 1895, the book includes chapters on Ptolemy, Copernicus, Galileo, Newton and other astronomers. Ball sets out to connect each person's character and circumstances with the discoveries associated with their work. The result gives readers a history of astronomy through individual lives and scientific problems.
The account of Bradley makes the physical demands of observation particularly clear. His exceptionally long refracting telescope accompanies descriptions of measurements of Venus, a transit of Mercury and observations of a comet. Ball also explains Bradley's attempt to measure small changes in a star's apparent position as the earth moves around the sun. Readers interested in how astronomical knowledge developed will find descriptions of instruments and research alongside the biographies, linking questions about the sky to the practical work of investigating them.
