About this book
Autobiography of Sir George Biddell Airy, Astronomer Royal from 1836 to 1881, is edited by Wilfrid Airy. The preface says the life of Airy was essentially that of a hard-working, business man. The preface also says he remained in office for 46 years, so entirely wrapped up in the duties of his post that the history of the Observatory is the history of his life.
One chapter says George Biddell Airy was born at Alnwick in Northumberland on July 27th 1801. A dated list of writings names, among others, On Decimal Coinage and a Description of the Transit Circle of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. The writer describes taking one Camera Lucida sketch of the instrument in the morning, dodging the heavy showers as well as possible.
