About this book
A Short History of English Liberalism is by W. Lyon Blease, first published in 1913. A quotation credited to Burke, from "On the Petition of the Unitarians," says a statesman, never losing sight of principles, is to be guided by circumstances. The contents list names chapters on Liberalism and Toryism and on Political Conditions in the Reign of George III, among others.
The book says the Tory habitually thinks of his fellow-creatures not according to their individuality, but according to their class. According to the book, the Tory deals with his object as invested with a status, and the Liberal deals with the man in himself. The book says that by 1867 Parliament had got no farther than to prohibit the employment of children under eight years and to restrict the hours of labour of women and youths under eighteen, among other measures.
