About this book
Four political upheavals provide Crane Brinton with a way to compare how revolutions develop: England in the 1640s, America, France and Russia. Based on lectures delivered in 1938, this historical study looks for recurring patterns while stressing the limits of any conclusions drawn from four cases. Its chapters move from weaknesses in established governments and the position of intellectuals to revolutionary leadership, moderate rule, radical organization and later reactions.
Brinton treats political change as a problem of institutions as well as ideas. In his discussion of Russia and France, rival networks of councils and clubs help explain how groups outside formal government gain power. The result offers readers a framework for examining why a new administration can lose authority even after an old regime falls, and for weighing the uses and risks of comparison in history.
