About this book
Political Thought in England from Locke to Bentham is by Harold J. Laski. The note says it is impossible to publish the book without some expression of the debt it owes to Leslie Stephen's History of the English Thought in the Eighteenth Century.
The text says Rousseau is the disciple of Locke, and the real difference between them is no more than a removal of the limitations upon the power of government which Locke had proposed. On the Revolution, the text says it meant less an abstract and general freedom than a special release from the arbitrary will of a stupid monarch. Smith, the text says, was living in a time of commercial expansion.
