About this book

Robert Lowth's grammar, printed in London in 1762, begins with a preface on the state of the English language. He says it has been cultivated and refined over two hundred years yet has made no advances in grammatical accuracy. The principal design of a grammar, he writes, is to teach us to express ourselves with propriety, and he says the plain way is to lay down rules and illustrate them by examples, and to point out what is wrong as well.

The pages sampled also take up punctuation, naming the period, colon, semicolon and comma and describing the degrees of connexion between sentences. Other passages quote sentences from Tillotson and Clarendon as examples. The title page adds the words 'with critical notes' and carries a quotation from Cicero in Latin.
