About this book
A Grammar of the English Tongue by Samuel Johnson says that grammar, the art of using words properly, comprises four parts: Orthography, Etymology, Syntax and Prosody. The grammar is prefixed to A Dictionary of the English Language, whose words are deduced from their originals and authorized by the names of the writers in whose works they are found.
The text describes A open as the a of the Italian, or nearly resembling it, as in father, rather and glass. The text says E is the letter which occurs most frequently in the English language. A passage says that words which terminate in l or ll, or p, make their preterit in t, even in solemn language, as crept, felt and dwelt. The text quotes verse such as Of ev'ry star the sky doth shew, And ev'ry herb that sips the dew, with the name Milton after it.
