A Sketch of the Life and Labors of George Whitefield is by the Rev. J. C. Ryle. The author proposes a hasty sketch of Whitefield's times, life, religion, preaching and actual work on earth. The text gives 1714 as the year Whitefield was born and 1770 as the year of death.
The author says the times when Whitefield lived were, unquestionably, the worst times that have ever been known in this country since the Protestant Reformation. The text quotes the expression Let the name of George Whitefield perish, so long as Christ only is exalted, as most characteristic of the man. The author tells those addressed that they must sow as Whitefield sowed, or they will never reap as he reaped.
