About this book

A sneeze that sends an old man's false teeth into the fire becomes Georgina Huntingdon's earliest vivid memory. Annie Fellows Johnston follows the little girl's view of a New England seaport, where a gray house faces the harbor and a towncrier rings his bell along the street. Her playful mother and the brisk housekeeper she calls Tippy give the household its contrasting rhythms.

Childhood imagination also drives the adventures outside. Georgina and Richard search the dunes for a missing pouch, armed with a shovel, a hoe and a small compass, while the terrier Captain Kidd joins their digging. Their excitement carries an anxious edge as they imagine meeting the pouch's owner. This children's novel offers seaside play, domestic comedy and the uneasy feelings that can accompany a shared secret, making it a useful choice for readers who enjoy stories told close to a child's understanding.
