About this book
One pair of roller skates brings Molly Johns and Towsley into Miss Lucy Armacost's life. Sharing a skate each, the children roll down an avenue hand in hand until a collision with the timid older woman brings their outing to a halt. Molly's quick concern and offer of support touch Miss Lucy deeply. She invites the children inside her large house, close to the Side Street where Molly lives.
Evelyn Raymond builds this children's story around young people whose circumstances draw adults into new responsibilities. Miss Lucy's orphan asylum begins with a single orphan, while a later hospital scene finds Towsley facing questions about his name and address. The contrast between his street knowledge and the assumptions prompted by his fine clothes offers a glimpse of how appearances shape the way adults understand a child.
