About this book
A Text-Book of Astronomy by George C. Comstock concentrates on parts of astronomy selected for their educational value, with the preface explaining that material important to a complete survey has deliberately been omitted. The preface singles out material permitting experimental treatment with simple apparatus as having particular value within the textbook's approach.
The instructions describe apparatus with a board supported on screws and a weighted line, and say that a person of ordinary mechanical skill can construct the equipment at very small cost. The account of faculæ describes bright patches stretching inconspicuously across the sun in two rather irregular belts, with a comparatively empty lane along the sun's equator. The discussion of tidal action explains that a tidal wave points a little ahead of the moon and must tend to pull the moon forward in its orbital motion.
