About this book

A Century's Progress in Astronomy is by Hector Macpherson. The preface says the volume originated in a desire to present, in small compass, a record of the marvellous progress in astronomy during the past hundred years. The preface acknowledges indebtedness to the valuable works of, among others, Professor Newcomb, Professor Schiaparelli and Sir Robert Ball.

The text says Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel, born in Hanover on November 15, 1738, was the fourth child of Isaac Herschel, an oboist in the band of the Hanoverian Guard. The text says that in 1777, when in his nineteenth year, Olbers entered the University of Göttingen to study medicine. The text says that in his chapter on the Evolution of Celestial Systems in his book on The Tides, Darwin discusses the distribution of the satellites of the Solar System.
