About this book
John C. Van Dyke, professor of the history of art at Rutgers College, wrote this text-book, which carries the date 1909. It includes illustrations of paintings, among them a head of Aesop by Velasquez at Madrid, and a transcriber's note says that some restored paintings are shown as modern color images with links.
One passage describes Egyptian wall painting: an expressionless face, flat backgrounds of arbitrary color, and paint mixed with gum-water and applied over a line drawn in chalk or coal on prepared stucco. Van Dyke calls it story-telling art and architectural decoration. Another passage turns to French painting and discusses David, Gros, the Field of Eylau and the Pest of Jaffa, and a move toward romanticism. An index lists painters such as Giovanni Bellini and Albert Bierstadt with page numbers.
