American Painting and Its Tradition is by John C. Van Dyke. A list headed Books by Prof. John C. Van Dyke names, among others, Art for Art’s Sake and The Meaning of Pictures.
The text says it was in 1884 that Homer finally went to Prout’s Neck, near Scarborough, where he built a cottage on the shore and lived for the rest of his life, quite alone. The text names the water-colors Mending the Nets and Watching the Tempest as giving warning of the coming man. The text says that a man who in 1881 was in Spain and Morocco went to England for the Century Magazine in 1886, having been commissioned to do certain portraits of literary men. The text says that in the early sixties a man whose landscape material at first had been gathered in the Berkshires went to the White Mountains, and that from 1864 to 1869 he was every summer in the Adirondacks.
