About this book

Albert Taylor Bledsoe, listed on the title page as Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy in the University of Mississippi, wrote A Theodicy; or, Vindication of the Divine Glory, as Manifested in the Constitution and Government of the Moral World. The book is dated 1854. Its introduction asks whether a theodicy is possible, and its first sections argue that the failure of Plato, other ancient philosophers and Leibnitz to build one is no reason for despair.

One passage compares the right theory of action to the key that let Newton open the secrets of nature. Another takes up the problem of evil, saying the difficulty lies in its existing anywhere under the government of a perfect God, and a section is given to the hypothesis of the Manicheans. Elsewhere the writer states that he has found the scheme of necessity to be a tissue of sophisms.
