About this book
B. F. Cocker, professor of mental and moral philosophy in the University of Michigan, gives this book the subtitle "An Essay in Opposition to Certain Tendencies of Modern Thought". It carries the date 1875. The preface says the volume had been announced under the title "Christianity and Modern Thought" and that the author delayed its appearance for several considerations.
In one passage he takes up the phrase "the Unknowable", quoting Martineau that the term contradicts itself, and argues that if God is, it cannot be absolutely impossible to know what he is. Another passage holds that when a man becomes conscious of himself he becomes conscious of a Higher Self, and that all languages have a term cognate with the Saxon "God". A further passage treats the ideal of perfection for the individual and for the nation. The endnotes cite Faraday, Lange and Claude Bernard.
