About this book
A Tramp's Sketches is a 1913 book by Stephen Graham. The preface says the book was written chiefly whilst tramping along the Caucasian and Crimean shores of the Black Sea, and on a pilgrimage with Russian peasants to Jerusalem. The preface says the book is not so much a book about Russia as about the tramp.
A first-person account describes going down to the river, gathering sticks that were very damp, making a fire, and boiling a kettle to make tea. A man answers the question "Is Italy losing?" with "Of course she is losing." The pilgrims keep the shrouds in which they are baptized until their death day, in order that they may be buried in them.
