About this book
Three Days in the Village, and Other Sketches is credited to Leo Tolstoy, and the text says it was written from September 1909 to July 1910. The contents list the sketch Three Days in the Village by day: First Day, Tramps; Second Day, The Living and the Dying; Third Day, Taxes; and a Conclusion called A Dream.
One sketch says that in the more remote parts of Sarátof, Tambóf, and other Provinces the peasants do not wait for the policeman to bring the tramps but always receive them and feed them of their own accord. The text says that it is not the philanthropic organisations, not the Government with its police and all its juridical institutions, that protects the well-to-do from being attacked by those who wander, cold, hungry, and homeless. Another piece says that nowadays nobles, merchants, officials, manufacturers, professors, teachers, authors, musicians, painters, rich peasants and others are all slave-owners of the peasants who have insufficient land.
