About this book

Clayton Edwards gathers thirty-three lives into one illustrated volume that runs from about 500 B.C. to 1920. The preface calls it a book of contrasts: real figures from every corner of the earth, set beside characters who lived only in the minds of men.

The real subjects include Buddha, Julius Caesar, Saint Patrick, Alfred the Great, Joan of Arc, Columbus, Queen Elizabeth, Francis Drake, George Washington, Napoleon, Lincoln, Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell. The semi-historical King Arthur and Robin Hood sit among them, and a closing section of heroes of fiction gives William Tell and Don Quixote.

Each chapter is a compact narrative biography in plain storytelling prose, written with younger and general readers in mind and illustrated in colour. It makes a handy way to meet many famous names in one place.
