About this book
Across four volumes, Lyndon Orr tells thirty-three love stories from history, each in its own chapter. The cast runs from Antony and Cleopatra and the medieval lovers Abelard and Heloise to Queen Elizabeth and the Earl of Leicester, Marie Antoinette and Count Fersen, Lola Montez and King Ludwig of Bavaria, and the Carlyles.
Orr writes as a storyteller with a historian's eye. The Cleopatra chapter opens with a vivid portrait of Alexandria, its harbour, boulevards, library and lighthouse, and weighs the Italian historian Ferrero's cooler reading of the queen against the romantic tradition. Later chapters follow Marie Louise after Napoleon's exile and the frontier world of Texas in the days when "G. T. T." meant a man had gone there to start again.
Published in 1914, the book suits readers who like biography told as narrative, and it offers an easy way into the private lives behind famous public names, from royal courts to the writers and poets of the nineteenth century.
