About this book
Lives of Illustrious Shoemakers by W. E. Winks brings together individual lives connected with shoemaking and a preface discussing the traditions attached to the craft. The preface discusses the esteem attached to the Gentle Craft and considers whether traditions produced that feeling or arose from it. The preface allows that both explanations probably contain some truth, since sentiment and tradition act upon each other.
The account of Sir Cloudesley describes assistance to General Kirke at the siege of Waterford and an attack on Duncannon Castle by ships and men. A chapter heading introduces Thomas Cooper as a self-educated shoemaker who reared his own monument.
